高对比度的图像区域具有更短的视觉响应时间，所以人会先感受到高对比度区域，然后再感受到其相邻的低对比度区域，这样一种空间区域的时间差带来了区域运动的感觉。当人眼球运动时，大脑会对视觉进行视觉补偿。这种眼球运动时的视觉补偿也一定程度上产生了运动的感觉。眨眼和微跳视（无意识的眼球运动）也参与了感受Rotating Snakes的过程。
